Formulas are dangerous in church and leadership because I believe church and leadership are more art than science. So data, metrics, and strategy are essential but often seen as formulas to copy.

There’s a conference and round table happening weekly in the world that gives formulas to what ails your church and leadership growth and influence.

  • “If you [do this] you’ll [get that].”

  • “Buy this course and you’ll grow by 15%.” Heck, I’ve even implied that, albeit unintentionally.

  • Even the negative side is formulaic. People pitch that there are “barriers” at 200, 500, 750, 1000, etc…. When does it end? Because those same experts at breaking the 200 barrier can’t crack 1000. Must be missing another formula.

I’m a huge fan of metrics, data, trends, strategies, and even borrowed experience from others.

My points of contention are when we 1) use those to avoid effort and 2) eliminate context and flat out copy.

Don’t Call Them Formulas

With that said, here are some don’t-call-them-formulas you may find insightful, provocative, or just mildly entertaining. Maybe they’re parameters. Or guidelines. Or suggestions. But they’re not formulas for success.
