The perfect campus venue capacity?
What's the perfect size? The 800 seat high school? The 150 seat cafetorium? The 2000 concert venue you got a real good deal on? Is there a perfect size?
I don’t think there’s a perfect “yes” to this answer. But I do think there are plenty of “no” options. And you do too, don’t you?
One of the funnier (and sad) things I see with church planters and new campuses is hype and hope getting in the way of brand consistency and value promotion.
“Hey Swebb, we got into the new high school and it has a beautiful 800 seat auditorium with all the lights and speakers.”
Congratulations, I suppose. Except you have 40 people every few weeks in an interest meeting and even your last church only had 500 on Easter. So … what will you do with 800?
There will be a massive chasm between you and the people. There will be a huge vacuum of energy that 100 people can’t fill. You’ll have low energy but bright lights. You’ll have “the spirit moving” but will anyone even know? We all see it all the time, don’t kid yourself. :) You can get the 800 seats. And you can be excited about a good deal. But not all good deals on paper are good deals for your energy management or momentum stewardship. We can talk more about this if you have a potential venue in your future. So what’s the right size? Or more accurately for this post, what size do I think is best…
