Stop Celebrating Quitters!
And yes, you've done this. But let's stop it, MSGA (Make Staying Great Again).
One of the dumbest traditions in church culture is how we celebrate people who leave.
I’m not talking about honoring someone who faithfully served for MANY years. (And less than 5 isn’t “many years.”) I’m not talking about sending missionaries, planting churches, or blessing someone going away on a military deployment.
I’m talking about the weird church habit of throwing massive parties for people who simply quit. Sure, they’re called away, fine. But still, they’re leaving.
Someone can work at your church for five years, announce they’re leaving, and suddenly everybody loses their minds.
Special dinner. Video tribute. Sunday stage moment. Six months severance. Custom gift. Handwritten book from the staff. A standing ovation. And he may even get to meet the Lead Pastor. :)
Meanwhile,
