I don't ever care about interest.
The phrase "Interest meetings" give me hives. And directly contradict the vision and values of every church planter and pastor of a multisite church.
I never once did an interest meeting for an Elevation campus. And I never coach planters to do them either. Sure, people at Elevation called them that. It’s a lazy, adopted habit from church people with limited intention and no vocabulary for their vision. So I expect to hear the phrase all the time. But I don’t have to cater to it, agree with it, and cultivate it.
I don’t ever want or need someone’s interest in my mission.
We need their investment.
They can be interested, sure. But I can’t build on that. It’s more than semantics too. Don’t get lazy and stop reading here. Because language matters. And your mindset will follow your mechanics (aka the language you use). This is why you’re so particular about the language you use with your kids or around other kids.
Having an interest meeting - and worse, building a strategy around if and how people are interested - screams this to the world:
“We won’t continue our mission or achieve our mandates without your preference.”
